Medical thesis editing checklist: prepare your draft for review

Before you send a medical thesis for editing, create one reliable version and define the help you need. This checklist is a preparation tool, not a replacement for your supervisor's advice or your institution's official instructions.

Confirm the permitted scope

Check what external assistance your institution allows. Keep research design, data interpretation and academic decisions with the research team. Record how editing or statistical assistance must be acknowledged. The thesis you submit must accurately represent your own work.

Gather the governing documents

Put the current thesis instructions, approved template, protocol and supervisor comments together. Do not rely on an old thesis from another student as the only formatting guide. Identify the correct draft and save a copy before changes begin.

Check the structure and narrative

Review the order of chapters, headings and subheadings. Does the objective match the methods? Are the results described consistently? Does the discussion distinguish your findings from prior literature? Flag unclear reasoning for the author rather than expecting a language editor to invent it.

Check tables, figures and references

Make sure table numbers are sequential, labels are understandable and every cited figure exists. Check consistency between sample counts in the text and tables. Verify incomplete references using the source. Do not create missing DOIs or bibliographic details from guesses.

Identify the correct reporting guidance

When preparing a journal manuscript from the work, choose the reporting guideline for the study design and check relevant extensions. EQUATOR provides a searchable reporting-guideline resource; journal and institutional instructions still need separate checking. EQUATOR reporting guidelines

Prepare a safe, defined handover

Remove unnecessary patient identifiers, confirm permission to share documents and agree the transfer method. State whether you need language editing, formatting or reporting review. Ask for deliverables, timeline and revision scope in writing. After delivery, resolve all author queries and approve the final version.

Questions about medical thesis editing checklist

Is editing the same as thesis writing?
No. Editing works with an existing author-written draft. It does not replace the student's research or supply undisclosed original scholarship.
What should I check last?
After accepting changes, recheck numbering, page references and the final file against the required template.
